The Caterham Graduates driving standards team has identified two on track incident where one car has pulled over towards another car with the potential for causing a collision.  In both cases the car that moved over did not have a driver’s side mirror.  Currently our regulations 5.6.2 (ii) d refer to MSA requirements Q19.15.1. The MSA requirements only define the area of the mirror, not the number of mirrors.

The following change to the regulation has been requested.

5.3.2 (xviii) A minimum of two mirrors shall be fitted. One shall be mounted on the windscreen or rollcage as an ‘internal rear view’ mirror and one shall be mounted on the driver’s side of the car as an “external rear view” mirror.  It is permitted to fit additional mirrors. Mirrors shall meet the MSA requirements Q19.15.1

This change may be made immediately on the grounds of safety, rather than waiting until next year and subject to MSA approval could be in place before our Oulton Park races.  In any case the change will be introduced in next year’s regulations.

Therefore it is recommended that competitors who do not have two mirrors, fit additional mirrors to meet the requirements of the proposed change in regulations.
